First af all thank you so much to Dave and all the Betatesters for the latest update! Great!

One thing I already noticed some time ago when flying airliners IFR has become more significant for me now as I am more into VFR flying recently.

When requesting a lower or higher altitude (hotkey + 1-9) in PF3 the reference for that obviously is the current altitude of the aircraft. I wonder if it should rather be the altitude I am cleared to.
For example: I filed an altitude of 5500 ft for my last VFR flight and was cleared to that altitude upon departure. When climbing through 2500 ft I noticed a consolidating cloud layer at about 4000 ft so I couldn't climb to 5500 ft VFR. I wanted to request 3500 ft. IMHO it would be logic to request 2000 ft lower (than already cleared). But in PF3 that would lead to a clearance for 500 ft. To get the clearance for 3500 ft I have to request 1000 ft higher instead. That seems odd when already cleared to 5500 ft.
It is even more of a problem when I want to remain at the altitude I am currently climbing through. That seems not to be possible with PF3 right now. I can only ask for 1000 ft lower or higher than the current altutide.

I hope this makes sense.

Regards

Ralf

Ralf,
I noticed too and +1 for the request.

Sorry to hijack your post Ralf (If it's a problem I can open a new topic) but on the same subject like yours I requested a new flight level via Mce. I requested a FL070 (the original flight plan FL) because for a reason I don't know the control sent me to FL090. So, after requesting FL070 with the correct sequence "Control <indicatif>Request FL070" the Atc answered me to climb FL130 !?. I tried some others request and every time the result of the answer was never what I asked.
I open a topic in the Mce forum to know what are the keys sequence Mce sends to Pf3 (may be it's a Mce problem).
Anyway I would like to know what is happened. Joined the Logs file.

Thanks and Regards,

Richard Portier

Hi Richard and Ralf,

I have got an issue when I try to select a lower FL, even at my approved FL ATC will only ask me to climb higher and never to descend, I have even double checked the keys I'm using.

Is this the same thing your experiencing?

Rob

Richard and Rob, I think you have a different issue. For me lower and higher always works as it should. It is just that it is referring to the actual altitude not the assigned altitude what I would prefer.

Since both of you are using MCE (if I remember correctly, Rob), I guess yours is a problem of MCE. With MCE you request a certain altitude/FL whereas in PF3 you can only ask for higher / lower. So there must be some calculations within MCE to achieve that. I guess there's something going wrong in these calculations.

You're welcome to use "my" post anyway. ;)

Ralf

I have been using PF3 externally of MCE and it's voice control. So I don't think it's MCE related in my case, I was and am using VCP2. I just thought I would mention what I had experienced, it doesn't overly bother me that it doesn't react it should. I just give my passengers a rough ride through any bad weather I face rather than avoid it lol

Hi Rob,

I got that impression too (last Pf3 version with hotkeys commands, not Mce), to be sure I need to do other tests later and report.

I have no logs of the released 3.2.0 where I used this, but with one of the last release candidates it was fine:
30/09/2016 19:05:31: 790 - Transcript: 'HANNOVER RADAR J-Bird 1608 Requesting Flight Level 80 '
30/09/2016 19:05:39: 010 - Transcript: 'Roger J-Bird 1608 Descend to Flight Level 80 '
Please create a new thread for this possible bug and attach logs, so we can investigate further without distracting from the original topic here.

Regarding the original topic: I don't know which reference altitude would be better, but if Dave could implement allowing requesting 0 higher/lower, then staying at the current altitude would work, too.

No problem Thomas, I open a new topic. Sorry.

No need to be sorry, it just makes things easier.

Regardig helix1250's issue:

In the log drumsart posted in the other thread this worked fine:
05/10/2016 01:27:52: 311 - ****** HotKey #20 detected!
05/10/2016 01:27:52: 346 - Requesting altitude change of -4000' at current alt of 6979
05/10/2016 01:27:53: 413 - Transcript: 'Roger November 8665 Romeo Descend to 3 thousand on 1047 '
So please create a new thread and attach your log so we can check.

Regarding the original question here, I found something in drumsart's log in the other thread made with 3.2.0:
ThomasAH wrote:
HotKey #6 with Departure/Center/Approach is "Request higher altitude due to turbulence" and always gives you +2000 feet. This explains FL90, even if it is funny/inconsistent that PF3 uses the cleared altitude as reference here: Your aircraft was at 3017 feet at this point.

That would help a lot indeed and would be appreciated.

Interesting what you found in the other topic. So I assume the "request lower due to clouds" also refers to the assigned altitude?
