Post subject:  Need advise on approach and PFE..

Ok, so I am using PFE and creating a flight plan using FSBuild. I don't select any SIDs or STARS when building in FSBuild.

I then setup the flight plan in PFE and ProFlight and again didn't select any SID's or STARS..

I took off and flew my flight and descended on to my destination as ATC asked me to. The last descent instruction I got was to FL150, ATC then said contact approach xxx.x. They then gave me the active runway using ILS and said use Sieria Tango approach (this isnt a star to my understanding??)..

After this instruction I didn't get any instructions to decsend (which I was expecting) and I was still at FL150 when my Localiser captured. I obviously was far to high...

Why would ATC leave me up there at FL150 and not bring me down to the level in which I capture the ILS (6500 or 8000 for this airport)? I was landing in KLAS on 25R..

I then ended up flying my own heading to get down to 6500 and once at this level captured the LOC at FLYES INT.

ATC never cleared me for landing (so I landed anyway - ooopps). Why would this be as I have it on CP MODE 2 so the co-pilot tunes all frequencies..?

I have had this senerio for the last few flights. I can't remember now if it has ever guided me down to the ILS intecept alt or not?

Does it do this is you use STARS?

I think I must be missing a fundamental piece of the process as the FSX ATC always instructed me down to the correct flight level.

I am using the latest version.. 2.14.0

Please let me know your thoughts...

Regards
Mark

Sierra Tango approach does indeed mean follow your STAR, that's why you didn't receive any further instructions to descend or receive any vectors because PFE was expecting you to follow a STAR. You must already have STAR's enabled in the SID's and STAR's menu in the options. You will find the options in question in the below image, you need to remove the crosses if you want to be vectored by ATC.

Arrr I see.. That makes a lot of sense. will check the settings but pretty sure I have these ticked..

If I setup a star in the options you mention for a certain airport will it always use that star or can you enter a few and it decide based weather and runway, and direction?

Also if I untick as you described so act vector me in will this be via a known procedure or random ?

Thanks for fast response..

You can only have one star per runway but you can add your own identifier, otherwise pfe will use the default ST.

If I am using ST approach and therefore flying my own STAR, when and how do I obtain clearance to land?

Do I have to request clearance to land?
How far our do I have to request it?

Thanks

Sorry,

The last question was meant to say:-

How far out do I have to request clearance to land when STAR ST being assumed?
