Hi

i didn't hear ATC tell me to 'expect runway approach' during far away, only hear ATC tell me 'to stay on this frequency, i have a traffic for you' until i close to 15nm than ATC tell me clear to the runway xx, but at that time i'm 15nm from my planned on landing runway yy, so it's too late for me to c/s/w to seek for runway yy as planned.

Attached the log file. do appreciate further advise. thank you.

The problem is probably due to your last waypoint (IKODI) being too close to the airport (12 miles). Your last waypoint should ideally be about 30 miles out, and anything less than 20 miles can cause problems with the approach. I would definitely use the waypoint removal feature on the PF3 flight plan page to remove IKODI, in which case your last waypoint will be KAMBU (19 miles out). This is better but still close, so you could remove KAMBU as well, and your last waypoint would be AVLOM (32 miles out). You will get your arrival runway assignment after you reach the last waypoint, so this will put PF3 in approach mode and give you your runway assignment much sooner.

Also you have the STARs box checked at the bottom of the SID/STAR page, so you will not get approach vectors after the last waypoint. If you want PF3 to vector you after you reach your last waypoint, uncheck the STARs box before connecting PF3.

if on flight plan file that we extract from simbrief did not include the star, would it be any benefit on the issue as well?

It depends. You want your last waypoint to be 25-40 miles out if possible. When flying in Europe you can often leave the STAR out of the flight plan because the STARs are short. In the U.S. and Canada the STARs can be hundreds of miles long and most of the STAR will be included in your flight plan, except for waypoints that are too close to the airport. In general I would say you can include the STAR from Simbrief and then use PF3's waypoint removal feature to remove any waypoints that are too close or are runway-specific. You can hover your cursor over the waypoint names on PF3's flight plan page to see the distances to nearby waypoints and the destination airport. See also Section 20.5 in the User Guide for more info on including SIDs and STARs in flight plans.

For this particular flight I would use AVLOM or GORVU as the last waypoint. After that, if the STARs box is unchecked, PF3 will vector you off the STAR for approach to the assigned runway. If the STARs box is checked you will not get vectors and will need to fly the approach to the assigned runway on your own.

noted sir, will try it later.

I have been for years looking at the STAR and removing waypoints from PF3 to avoid the problem of receiving the runway at last minute. It is workable, but a pain and makes flying using PF3 seem a little bit too robotic. (Do not get me wrong, love this program). The only issue with this is that sometimes the program gives a different runway than expected, then when flying the STAR, it gives you a runway change back to the original runway. This occurs a lot during light, variable winds. Would be nice to have the option to choose the preferred runway if winds are less 5 or 10 knots. In real life, some airports will assign you the "preferred" runway with a slight tailwind. This helps with taxiing. Also, it would avoid some minor conflicts when using real world connected traffic and the landing plans are landing opposite of you.

I believe this suggestion has been made in the past. Just a suggestion.
