Dave,

I've just reinstalled the cumulative updates, with Microsoft Security Essentials real time scanning turned off, and I still get the error. The default settings are restored but clicking O.K. on the error message box causes PFE to close.

Although PFE is basically working I've noticed a few other issues, which could be due to mistakes on my part, which don't give me a lot of confidence that everything is OK. First I've never heard the pilot request IFR clearance when pressing '0' although the clearance is given and can be acknowledged. Second when reaching the hold I'm told to contact the tower, so I acknowledge that, change to the frequency given, press '0' and hear the pilot ask for taxi clearance again!

Do you want more detail on the other issues now or should we get to the bottom of the error message first?

Dave,

Further to the above I've uninstalled PFE and then reinstalled it from the disc (v1.84) and then used it without applying the update. What a difference! It worked as I think it should, and as I vaguely remember Pro Fight 2000 doing years ago, and I was able to successfully complete a short IFR flight. The only slight issue I found was that PFE ATIS was on the same frequency as Clearance Delivery, 121.75, so I has to turn PFE ATIS off in the options.

I think that as you suspected the previous problem lay in the cumulative update not installing properly, either that or for some reason V2.14 won't run properly on my PC. Can you suggest anything to get the online update to work as for some reason trying to update using the manual download is causing problems and I'd obviously like to use PFE with the improvements in the current version?

Andy, try the manual update as described in the cumulative documentation... You may then discover where things are going amiss

I see on looking at the manual that that one's my mistake  . I'll try again and press '6' next time!

Dave,

I've now done that, and had Windows in Safe Mode just to be sure of nothing interfering and got no errors whilst installing the update.

Rebooted and started PFE and am still getting the 'Runtime error 381 Invalid property array index' error when pressing the 'reset defaults' button on the 'hotkey options' menu.

I thought I'd try to run PFE anyway, with VCP 'Off' so I knew what was or wasn't happening, but despite PFE apparently passing its self test on starting I still had problems:

1. I never heard the pilot request clearance although I received it and could acknowledge it.

2. On arriving at the hold I was told by ground to contact the tower and I acknowledged that. Changed to tower frequency, pressed '6', but didn't hear the pilot's request for take-off clearance nor did I get take-off clearance, nor an on-screen prompt that I was on the wrong frequency. After waiting a few minutes I gave up!

Any ideas what to try next please?

Dave,

A bit more info for you. I found the Vista64 update here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16 and installed it. Obviously that wound my installation back to v2.1.0 but PFE works. The 'Runtime Error 381' doesn't occur and all comms in PFE work correctly.

From my point of view the situation seems to be that on my Win7 64-bit system:

v1.84 - Works with no errors or problems
v2.1.0 - Works with no errors or problems
v2.14.0 - Has the '381' error and problems with comms

Having tried various methods of installing the culmulative update, and those apparently working correctly, I'm wondering if it's not an update installation problem but one of v2.14 not being compatible with my system for some reason.

The only way I can think of proving it one way or another would be to get hold of a v2.14 complete installation either on disc or by download but I'm not voluntering to buy PFE again to see!

Dave,

I've also looked at this post: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=22, which I thought might help, but although I've got 'pfe_v26_system.exe' in my PFE folder I don't have 'Xinstall3.exe', should I have? If so I wonder why it's not there and how do I get hold of it?

Dave,

I don't know if it's an entirely valid test as my laptop doesn't have FS2004 or FSX on it but I've just installed PFE on it from my v1.84 disc and then run the cumulative update. The laptop runs Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

Version 1.84 started and ran O.K. and the 'reset default' option on the 'hotkeys' screen didn't produce an error. After the update v2.14.0 started and ran O.K. but gave exactly the same 'Runtime error 381' as it does on my desktop.

Two things come to mind, either I'm getting the update process wrong repeatedly or the version of the cumulative update currently available can't for some reason successfully update a v1.84 installation from disc to v2.14.0

Dave,

The problem with missing calls in v2.14 I mentioned previously was occuring in FSX. I installed FS2004 and tried the same flight with that. The problem with missing calls happened there as well.

Are you any closer to diagnosing the problem I'm having, would any log files help? Looking at the latest debug_monitor.log I'm seeing several mentions of 'Error in the application' like this:
