Hello,

I am having trouble understanding the altitude restrictions and altitude ceiling on the VTU5 SID at KLAX. (http://155.178.201.160/d-tpp/1210/00237VENTURA.PDF). I want the correct SID ceiling so that I can input that into PFE so that ATC does not bug me until I reach this altitude.

Let's say I were to use the VTU.RZS transition. If I were to read this right, it basically says, after takeoff from let's say Rwy 24L, maintain heading 250 and stay below 3000 ft. You will then receive vectors to VTU VOR after which you will navigatee to RZS.

My questions:

1. What is the altitude restriction at VTU on this chart? Will ATC be assigning this?
2. In real life, will ATC vector me again to RZS after passing VTU?
3. What would the altitude restriction at RZS be?
4. What does the "6000" between VTU and RZS mean? Does that mean minimum altitude of 6000?
5. The SID ends at RZS I assume (or rather "transitions" into RZS). What is the SID celing?

Thank you for your help!

The only altitude climb restrtiction on this SID is :
RWYS 24/25 to cross SMO R-153 AT OR BELOW 3000 FT

So to answer your Q's

1. There is no "crossing" restriction at VTU (but see 4). ATC will have given you an altitude to fly to before take off, you should be climbing to or be at that assigned altitude.
2. Before takoff you will have been assigned the VTU5.RZS transition, so you will not get instructions again untill you reach RZS.
3. Again there is no "crossing" restriction at RZS (but see 4), so you will be climbing to or be at the altitude ATC gave you before takeoff (or at or climbing to a subsequently assigned altitude)
4. Correct. The minimum altitude is 6000 to fly that leg. So ATC will have assigned an altitude of at least 6000 by this point. This also means that you will expect to be at minimum of 6000 before crossing VTU/RZS.
5. The VTU5.RZS ends at RZS. The next waypoint will be an intersection/waypoint/VOR on a airway. SID ceiling ?....there isn't one ! Just fly to the altitude last assigned by ATC

When using PFE , I like to fly my own departures/ SIDS and get further instructions from ATC either when I have reached a certain altitude OR when I have reached a certain waypoint in the SID.
In this example If I selected to get further instructions when the SID is complete (at RZS), it is likely that 6000 feet would be the first assigned altitude, and that I would then have to fly that alt until RZS (43 miles) at which point I would get further climb instructions plus "continue own navigation". This would not be very realistic, so I would choose to either tell PFE during setup that the SID ends at VTU, or that the SID ends when I have reached 6000 feet. This way I will get further climb instructions earlier than at RZS. If you have set up your flightplan so that VTU and RZS are the first two waypoints, with 6000 and 15000 as the altitudes respectively, and either tell PFE to end the SID at VTU, OR end the SID at 6000 feet this should work fine.

Hope this helps

Peter
