When landing I am told to contact ground when clear of the 'active runway'.When I contact ground it tells me to taxi to the terminal but it does not give me any gate number etc as is given in the default FSX atc.

I am wondering if there is some method by which I can get a gate allocated to me following landing.

Yes you can reserve a gate. Please check the user guide
