Have you been in VCP mode 1 or higher? In VCP mode 0 you have to dial in the frequencies yourself.

Please attach logs.

If you're doing VFR from an untowered airfield, you can use a trick: If you ask FSS for airport advisories, it will tell you to contact Unicom, which your VCP mode 2 will automatically tune to.
If you announce departing the area on Unicom or Multicom, you may automatically be handed over to Departure, but I'm not sure right now.

Yes I'm in VC mode 1...and no auto hand-offs this flight...the only thing different was that this was a VFR flight...(which i rarely do)...yes it was from an uncontrolled departure...i tuned departure manually once i got up in the air...sorry, the logs were over written...

but, does this mean that VFR does take away auto hand-offs?

I don't think so, though there may be some situations where there is no automatic handoff. I know I get automatic handoffs in many VFR situations, e.g., handoff from Departure to Approach, and handoff from Approach to Tower when the airport is reported in sight. Using CP Mode 2 on a recent VFR flight, this was all automatic:

I'm not sure about initially contacting Departure after taking off from an uncontrolled field. I have raised an issue related to this on the beta forum. In the meantime try some VFR flights in CP Mode 2.
