Flying VFR on a short flight from Redding KRDD to Gasner 2O1 with RBL as a way point.

Center is doing flight following and states the "airport is XX miles to the east, report airport in sight." Still connected to the Center frequency, I hit the 8 key to report airport in sight and PF3 comes back with can't amend the flight plan or land at alternate. (Something like that). 8 is the key for both amend flight plan and report airport in sight.

How can I report airport in sight? Same thing happens on similar flights into other uncontrolled airports. Thanks for the assistance, just can't figure it out.

"Beech November 157 Juliet Tango The airport is to the east 18 Miles Descend and maintain 5 thousand at pilot's discretion. Report airport in sight."
But you were still at FL150 and 16 miles away when using the hotkey, so maybe Center did not think you had the airport in sight? :)
If you descend, you will get a hand-off to Approach, there the hotkey only means "Report airport in sight", so that might work better.

Remember also that the instructions are sequential. "Report airport in sight" does not mean "Can you see it now" It means after you have descended to 5,000ft report airport in sight if you are heading towards it.

Attain the lower altitude first then report airport in sight. Thanks! I appreciate the guidance.

Gasner is an uncontrolled airport in the mountains. Is there a way to cancel flight following?

Yes, contact FSS at the destination's frequency (or 122.00 if that does not exist) and close your flight plan.
