Not a one-off issue, though certainly not something I notice every flight, either... I think I have posted about this before, but a long time ago and I cannot locate the thread now.

I wonder why I am sometimes not given any climb instructions by ATC. I climb to the altitude given by clearance before departure, then after a while grow a bit 'suspicious' (given I know this happens from time to time) that I have not been asked to climb any further. If I 'log in' to ATC under those circumstances, I quite often hear the pilot say that he is '... out of flight level (current altitude) for flight level (new altitude)', though no climb instruction to that new altitude has been given (I double check that with the COM log).

Does the log (of a flight where this occurred, of course) show any reason for this? I don't think it can be an error on my part, certainly not every time it happens at least (even then not sure what input from me could cause the issue)!

Many thanks.

Mmmmmmh, strange one... quick question - did you do a flight immediate prior to this one and without exiting and restarting PF3?

No Dave, I always shut down and restart PF3 between flights. 100% sure.. :-)

(Had another oddity tonight: ATC gave me a departure altitude of 8000', but when I got to 4000' I was told to maintain 4000'. I guess real-world ATC can change their mind like this, but is PF3 programmed to do it?).

Try turning SID's OFF when not using them

Dave.. sorry to say something seems to have gone very wrong with ATC's altitudes.. I attach another log.

I am pretty sure that my initial clearance on that flight was to 15,000' (though the COM log had scrolled past that by the time I checked, so I couldn't verify. I had entered 15,000' anyway into the plane's A/P, something I do as soon as instructed, so as not to forget!). The pilot later reports, however, that the a/c is "out of flight Level XXX (whatever it was) for 6000 feet".

6000? Even if I did enter the initial clearance incorrectly (?), when I then asked to climb ("due to turbulence"), so as to avoid having to descend (I was already over 10,000').. the ATC reply was "Unable at this time. Maintain 24,000 feet". Maintain 24,000? Where did that come from all of a sudden? Not even 'climb to..." I am sure you can see all this is the log.

The flight plan had a SID, a STAR and an approach.

Had many flights like this recently (contradictory altitude calls from ATC). Can't believe all the mistakes are mine! (If they are, I need to find a different hobby, more suited to my apparent mental agility, such as watching daytime TV - heaven forbid!!).

Thanks.

Martin, please try the attached interim version to see if this solves your problems... it certainly should do.

If it does I'll just retire! :o

... repeated same flight. Only flown this one so far, but all working just fine now.

Thank you Dave for the quick fix. Great service as ever.

I don't want you to get mad a me by adding to this post, but I experience the same issue and do not want to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes get an initial clearance altitude, then upon contacting departure it knowledge's another. Example today I was cleared to 32000 feet by KJAX clearance delivery. After takeoff, contacted approach and my VCP stated we were climbing to 15,000 feet. Attached are the logs for today's flight.

Issue began with last update.

-Matt
