Post subject:  Approach Handoff Distance

Hi Dave,

I have recently been playing about with the Approach Handoff Distance, ideally I would like a bit of breathing time between the hand-off and getting approach instructions. I have tried various settings between 1 and 5 to try and achieve this but I am consistently being handed off at about 15 to 20 miles out.

I was wondering if you could either tell me I have misunderstood this feature or perhaps spot another setting I need to set or remove?

Many thanks,

John

Hi John,

The handoff distance option is merely the distance at which you're 'handed off' to Approach, whereas I think what you're asking for is another delay between the handoff and then Approach giving you instructions? Unfortunately that's not possible at the moment but I'll happily mark this as something to look into going forward

Thanks, Dave,

Such a feature would be great . . . in your own time of course.

You say "The handoff distance option is merely the distance at which you're 'handed off' to Approach" - just out of inquisitiveness, distance from where?

Best regards,

John

Well by default handoff to approach happens at the last waypoint... the advanced option allows you to set a distance so handoff occurs at n miles before that last waypoint (n=1 to 25)

Thanks, Dave,

If I could achieve that it would solve my desires nicely, but as I said I am actually getting handed off to Approach 15-ish miles before the last waypoint with that setting at 1 (or other low number).

Best regards,

John

Hi John,

Okay, just been delving into the code and refreshing my memory and I noticed something I'd missed when making changes for 3.10.20, back in Feb '21.

Currently PF3 still uses the hard coded value of 20 miles for the approach handoff, if you have anything other than zero set. So, according to the log you provided you did actually get the handoff at 19.75 miles from your last waypoint, whereas it should have been at 1 mile, as you have it configured for 1 mile. The 'expect runway nn' instructions then came when you reached that last waypoint, so unless I'm missing something this is giving you exactly what you want, isn't it? And now I've corrected the hard coding error it will be entirely flexible, but for now you'll be handed off at 20 miles (max) from the last waypoint and receive instructions on reaching the last waypoint.

Thanks, Dave,

Yes that fits exactly with what I am experiencing.

If you are to fix that at a future update so that the distance is variable according to the setting, that will be perfect for me. I wouldn't bother consuming your time on the offer of building in an optional delay feature at the last waypoint that you mentioned.

With best regards and thanks.

John

Fix is already applied and I'll hopefully put another small update out maybe next week
