Post subject: | [Wishlist] Holding Notification |
I've been using holds a lot lately. I've noticed that notification of holding occurs as the aircraft reaches the hold point. This would have been fine when there was no random hold probability since the user had selected holding and knew it was going to occur. However, now if I have selected a random hold probability, I need to know significantly in advance of the hold that it will occur. This is nothing to do with FMCs and similar modern paraphernalia, but has to do with configuring the aircraft for the hold in terms of speed. Could this be added to the Wishlist? Thanks, Andy |

You need to post your logs. Whenever I get a hold I get told about it 3 to 5 miles before. In real life You won't always be told "significantly" in advance. How much for you is "significantly?" If you are flying into a busy airport like Heathrow then you can expect a hold pretty much 100% of the time. Where holds are published you should in fact always expect to be held. In other words you should be prepared already. So not being instructed to hold is a bonus for the crew. When you say you need to configure the a/c for speed just how fast are you going that you can't slow down in time to 220kts? If that is a problem then you are probably going too fast. Look at my speeds in this video. You'll see that I am anticipating what is coming next. Even though on a couple of occasions I do let the speed run away a bit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3flqD_Ne6g And I was advised of the hold at 8DME. That's plenty of time. Oh, and I am not using an FMC either. The screen just shows the fpl route. Almost always with STARs with holds at their end the STARS will have speed limits which may already be at hold speed. A good piloting skill is to always assume that a published hold will be imposed. If it isn't then your toast will still be warm when you get home! |

Look, it's a straightforward request... How about easing up on the patronising tone? If it can't be done, fine, I'll suck it up, but I'd rather wait for Dave to make that call, if it's ok with you? Andy |

I'm sorry you think it is patronising. But without your logs there is nothing to go on other than what you have described and what I have experienced. And what is experienced in the real world. You are in effect making an unsupported request for a change. Holds were discussed at length during early beta and indeed the interval between advising and taking up the hold was increased "significantly". If you can justify the need to be advised of a hold at a greater distance than say 8DME then you must explain why and with evidence to support your request. You still haven't indicated what your interpretion of "significant" is. Without that what can Dave do? Bear in mind that the points I have raised are valid as they are applied in real life. Produce the logs and Dave will look at them. |
