Flew a simple straight line route in Canada for a VA with a cruise altitude of 9000. I was given initial clearance to 4000 with expect 9000 after ten. I didn't get the subsequent clearance and had to request climb to 7000 and then 9000. Did I miss the clearance?

It seems Departure magically detected that you are on their frequency and you magically knew that you were cleared for 8000.
Looks like some kind of timing bug.

So in the interim I need to pay close attention to my responses and act on any magical clearances?

That would work, or just count on your luck that this does not happen again.
(I think I have never seen this before)

I have had this a number of times - and sent logs to Dave. I am cleared to one altitude, reach it, then hear no more about changing my level, even though I have a 'nag' set for non-compliance (the nag works in other circumstances). Other ATC instructions, like headings, are OK. After a while I 'test' things by contacting ATC and get the pilot announcing '... out of flight level XXX for flight level YYY'.

I have the ATC log running too (currently scuppered by the fact, as reported, its slots fill up and then it shows no more, but I am sure Dave is on to that) and that, when there's still space, shows no instruction to climb either.

I just had this issue in a flight in Japan today. Cruising was FL 360 and I was cleared all the way to FL 340, but then heard nothing for several minutes. I requested an increase "due to clouds" (FL 400) then asked for a decrease "due to turbulence" (FL 360). This has happened to me once in a while - I don't know if it is something that can be isolated and prevented from happening again. Other than that the flight was perfect! A log is attached. Thank you!

Thanks for the log, I'll look into it. In future could you please start a new post for such things rather than resurrecting posts that are 4 years old, as it makes it much easier for me to keep track of things. Thank you.

Feedback noted and thank you as always.
