Post subject:  ATC T/O clearance with a/c still on the runway
I have been working abroad for almost 2 years and have only been able to use FS intermittently in that period. Now back in UK ( apart from a 6-week stint from early next month) and find a few issues that I am a bit rusty with: forgive me if I am asking obvious questions.

The issue here is simply (as per thread title) that ATC (FS9) is giving me T/O clearance too early - they do say "hold for traffic" as appropriate, but I am thencleared when the incoming a/c is still on the runway. Not a 'biggie', but if it is fixable by a tweak somewhere, somehow, that would be nice..

What setting do you have "Traffic" set at...mines around 30% to keep traffic to a minimum or you can zap it by using FSUIPC (you may need to ask about that or do a google search on what to do as i don't do it)

What instructions did you actually get... 'Line up and wait' or 'Cleared for takeoff'? Obviously the later is incorrect and I would have to look into it.

Hi Dave,

I get 'clear for take-off' instructions.

My traffic is set at 50%, and I use AI Separation. I can 'zap' a/c with FSUIPC, but it only works at relatively close quarters. I get 'cleared for take-off' from ATC when a landing a/c is taxiing half way down the runway.

Does the problem still occur without AI Separation running? AI Separation works by slewing aircraft backward and might account for the AI aircraft being somewhat behind the location PFE expects it to be. Ideally it shouldn't make any difference but who knows, there might be a delay in updating the position data.

Sounds like a timing issue Martin, but it's very difficult to say. If the AI aircraft had just started to turn off the runway then your cleared for takeoff could have trigger early. I will check over that part of the code and see what I can find.

Anything to report Dave? I still get quite a dew instances of double AI a/c on the runway, and I am quite regulalrly cleared for take off when AI a/c are still to clear the runway...

In PFE at a busy airport I usually/always get! "Line-up and wait" while there is an a/c already on the rwy about to take-off. I usually wait until the "offending" a/c has gone down the rwy as one would in real life :lol: Then PFE is ok.

As Dave said I think it's a timing issue. The default ATC is pretty slick actually and probably the information doesn't get passed to PFE quite in time.

I am going to post the log file below (as much of it as I am allowed; too long to post the lost. I can email it or post other relevant sections, of course). This is at London Heathrow, taking off Rwy27L in a PMDG 747-400F.

I get to the runway, tune to Tower frequency and announce I am ready for take-off. I am told to hold for traffic. Fine. ATC/PFE clears another a/c for take-off, then immediately tells me to line up and hold, even though the AI a/c has not even started its take-off roll. OK, no big problem, I wait back a bit. Once it's moving I line up and hold, as instructed. Meanwhile, other a/c, entering 27L from the other side of the runway are cleared also to line up and hold and they do so, ploughing their way through my user a/c. ATC continues to tell me to line up and hold every 15 seconds, even though my a/c is on the runway in the T/O position. Maybe (I can't be 100% sure now, but it looked fine) I didn't get quite far enough along the runway to be 'in position', but even so, why I am I being told to enter the runway when other a/c are already stood there preparing for take-off. And why are yet more AI a/c allowed to enter the runway when both my user a/c and another Ai a/c are already at the starting point?

What with FDC aborting now every time I start it up (posted in the FDC forum) flying is just not 'fun' at the moment!! :( May be an FS9 induced error rather than PFE, but I really would like to get back to realistic ATC somehow, without having multiple a/c on the runways so much of the time. (This problem does not seem to have anything to do with traffic density settings - it happens even with the density turned down and fewer a/c at the airports).

OK, tried again to double check and made sure I am in the right position for TO on the runway. I am, as I said, at EGLL (Simwings), entering 27L from the south taxiway. I am told to line up and wait, even though other AI traffic coming to 27L from the north taxiways has been cleared to line up and hold at the same time. ATC continues to ask me to line up and hold, even though I am on the runway.
