Post subject:  Unable to licence PFE after a re-install

Hi,
I have just re-installed PFE onto a new computer. And It is not recognising the 'pf_emulator.key' that I copy in to the main PFE directory 'c:\fs_addons\pfe' that I recieved from yourselfs on purchase.

I have noticed that the registration number is different from the original one that I forwarded to you when I purchased it.

I have just in case sent an email to the reistration email.

Thanks as ever
Paul

PFE registration is pc specific.

Sad to hear this. One reason for my (and probably other users') decision to purchase PFE instead of RC is the many reports of registration problems after hardware changes.
(I don't want to start the "crackers will crack despite this and paying customers are the only ones suffering here" discussion, I think we already know all the arguments to both sides. Just a small hint that you might want to re-evaluate this at some point in the future)

What exactly is your problem? You should by now have the new license key.... doesn't it work?

I believe most software publishers operate registration schemes.

Sorry, I did not want to cause confusion. I have no actual problem, because I'm not the original poster (Paul B).

Yes, many have, but the level of inconvenience it causes for the customers varies.
Registration that is bound to the current PC hardware will need updating the registration sooner or later, e.g. due to hardware changes or even reinstall on the same machine, causing extra work for you and the user.
It would get even worse if your company should be no longer available (in the best case because you got rich by selling it), then the user would no longer be able to use the program without applying a dubious and potentially dangerous crack.
My old PFE version still works with the CD key (and a combination of email address and code for the voice package), so I was able to reinstall it easily when switching from Windows XP to Windows 7.
The only other ATC software at the time I bought PFE that is usable without voice input (RC) would require an updated registration in this (and too many other) situation(s), which is one of the reasons (maybe the most important reason) I decided against it.

Well I can see on both sides of the fence because I am a software customer too :)

Many years ago a developer refused to renew my activation after I had disagreed with him on a particular subject - the guy concerned was known to be somewhat curt and abrasive with people. After that I became determined not to have any "activated" software.

However, I wanted to have an ATC program to accompany FS2004 which is why I decided to buy PFE. I don't have any difficulties in accepting that PFE has to be activated but can I safely assume that if OnCourse Software decided one day that they didn't want to continue supporting the product any more that users would be given a "lifetime" key which they could then use?

Yes, I use Windows 7 but I'm stumped to understand if there is any significance about this relative to the question I asked - or perhaps there in't any??!!

Just my warped sense of humour when you said you wouldn't have any 'activated' software. :)
