I am getting this error message when trying to run PFE in FSX.
Any help will be appreciated.

Error:-1073741674 - Automation error in "SetupDirectSound" routine.

Try installing the cumulative updates and follow the instructions. I am assuming you have not installed PFE into the program files folder?

Thank you both for your response.

Dave L, yes the problem started just after reinstalling Ultimate TerrainX. I uninstalled UTX but that didn't rectify the problem.

Dave M, no not in program files folder. I will try installing the cumulative updates.

Getting following message when attempting to install the cumulative updates....

"gacutil.exe- This application could not be started"

"C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\could not be loaded."

Happy to report problem solved. Somehow .NET was corrupted and after much google searching found a tool to fix .NET issues.
Now FDC and PFE are loud and clear. Also have REX and FTX Central working. :D
