I don't seem to be understanding how to configure the plane so that the vcp will fly it in mode 3. The only mention I of this I saw is in the tutorial:

"For the purposes of this exercise I would suggest you switch to GPS navigation with AP, HDG and ALT ON so the VCP will basically fly the aircraft for you."

"GPS navigation" means to me that the autopilot is in NAV mode and the NAV/GPS switch is set to GPS, so that's already a bit confusing. But I tried it anway, with the NAV/GPS switch is set to GPS and the autopilot in HDG mode instead of NAV mode. Nothing seemed to be happening. I did the test at a point where a waypoint was being crossed and the heading needed to be changed. It didn't, so the vcp didn't seem to be flying the plane. What am I missing?

Have you tried this with stock aircraft using default panel?

Me? Use a default panel? There's no need to resort to insults.

Just kidding. No, I didn't try that, and I'm still not sure what it is I'm supposed to be trying. This is actually a function that I rarely used with Radar Contact and I'm sure I'll get along fine without it. All the planes I regularly fly have gps and/or fmc that will fly the flight plan for me, and PFE has a pause function. I find the enroute portion of the flight to be very boring, so I'll usually let the gps/fmc fly the plan once at cruise level, then come back, unpause it, and fly the approach and landing. Let's just forget I brought it up.
