Looks like we got a problem here. I am still working with Dell but they say I need to contact the program developer (i.e. you)

No rush in getting back to me. What to try next?

Hi,

I am a bit stumped at what's going on here as based on previous info I expected to see that Web Display had started up and connected to PF3. However, in looking back at the screenshot of your Web Display directory I have noticed something very odd - the log file is dated 11/24/2023 and your have no old-log file. Also, the log file that you provided originally shows that you are running Web Display 2.3.0, but the program file in this folder is 2.4.0 (I can tell from the date).
This suggests to me that you have more than one copy of Web Display (and possibly PF3) installed on your system.

Please could you check that when you run PF3 you are definitely starting the copy in C:\FS_Addons\PF3

Thanks,
Martin

PS Apologies for the delay in coming back to you, it's amazing how busy you become when you're retired - Dave will find out soon!

Hi Martin,

PF3 is definitely being run from c:/FS_Addons/PF3

When loading it first asks if I want to run PF3 Web Display.exe (brief screen flash when i press yes) then asks if I want to run wx.exe which then loads PF3)

I have thoroughly checked and cannot find any other PF3 located on my system.

I deleted the PF3 Web Display log from the folder and then ran FS and PF3. Programs load as i described above and guess what. No new log file is created. Go figure!

I'm struggling to understand what's happening here - I've not heard of a system asking for confirmation to run Web Display when starting PF3.

Please can you try one more thing (I'd like to see what's on the screen that briefly flashes up):
Open a command window, and at the prompt navigate to the Web Display folder: cd \FS_Addons\PF3\PF3_Displayer\PF3_WEB_Display
Then run Web Display from the command line: ..\PF3WebDisplay.exe (the ..\ is important)

Let me know what you see - I'm expecting that there will be some sort of error message that we haven't captured before).

Thanks,
Martin

Martin, I am really having a hard time (see ZIP file) getting the cmd prompt to execute properly. Can you send me a screen short of how you do it. The screen flash is so short that there is nothing but a flicker and without a log file we won't know what is going on.

Apologies, there was a mistake in what I asked you to do - to run WD the command is .\PF3WebDisplay.exe not ..\PF3WebDisplay.exe
(I want to force it to execute the file from the folder you are in, rather than searching the path set by the environment)

Here's a screenshot from my system showing this - you will see that it starts WD in another command window:

It would be great if you could please try again.

Thanks,
Martin

Good thing us old, retired folk have leaned patience.

Screenshot one show the commands as you requested.
IMG file shows what happens when I press the last command.

When I press YES screen shot one appears again

No other result.

Martin had to take a crash course in extended patience working with me!

Oh dear, it seems that Windows UAC doesn't like Web Display!
I could think of two things that might be causing the problem, UAC or a missing DLL - UAC was the more likely if WD had previously been working.
I believe that a fairly recent Windows 11 update has changed the way in which application security (UAC as was) works.

WD as-built requests administrator privileges as it needs to open a specific (configured) socket to support the web server it hosts.
Please can you try the same commands again, but this time start the command window with 'Run as administrator' - I'd like to see if WD is allowed to run.
If it is then I would suggest changing PF3 to 'Run as administrator' to see if that fixes things - anything that PF3 starts should inherit its privileges.

Martin

PS Dave does himself a disservice - I had to deal with far worse during my long career in IT
