PF3 wav files - updates?

OK, I know that this is not going to be a very popular question at Oncourse, but I dare to ask anyway :oops:

I can't help but be very conscious when I load PF3 of how many of the airlines we are presented with are now long gone, and of course how many more are missing. Clearly the original sound files are as they are and no one is going to produce a brand new set (sadly!!). But is there no way to 'refresh' the sound database? Easy to remove the defunct airlines, but how to incorporate missing ones? It must be possible at least to cut and paste a good number of the current wav files to make new ones? The end user can't really do that, first because of the enormity of producing so many files - and also (speaking for myself), even though I have tried, I have never managed to produce a .wav file that PF3 will actually read and 'speak'. Well, very possibly the good folks at Oncourse have no better method themselves for editing/creating the files than those that use PF3. I don't know...

I am pretty sure I know what the gist of the answer will be to this (if there is one!), and even before it's posted I can say I do understand the dilemma - but it is a shame that the ATC side of PF3 (most of it, that is!) is becoming ever more obsolete :cry: I've been using Oncourse software since S-Combo first came out, so a miraculous renewal (somehow) would be so welcome.. at least to add the most obvious missing airlines and callsigns - GoAir for instance: a huge Indian Airline. There must be dozens of files with the sound 'Go' and hundreds/thousands with the sound 'Air'. (it'd just take a few dozen (!!) willing volunteers to record new ones too...! They wouldn't have to be the same voices as the originals of course - I am sure Dave L would be happy to repeat his previous triumphs! Haha)

OK, nobody snap my head off now please! :D

I sympathise with you on this point but it has been asked before with the answer you were expecting.
I myself have just been looking at the work involved in producing new callsigns and it is a mammoth task just to identify the existing ones.
If I am correct there are over a thousand existing callsign wavs including all the different accents.
I did think I may have a go at doing just the European ones as that is where I fly but it would be one major, major undertaking.
First to identify the files needed to cut and paste and then the actual cut and paste itself, followed by the reinsertion of said files back into the proper place.
It would be brilliant if they could be updated but at the moment I am a little overwhelmed by it all.
If Dave fancied the idea and could maybe supply a list of airline names that correspond with the pfac number that would certainly make life easier.
At the moment the only way to tell is to listen to each file and jot down the name and the corresponding number. Very tedious.
Again maybe, if Dave was willing, if some of us could make worthy cut and paste replacements he could do the necessaries to incorporate them into the program by replacing the outdated ones.
Just a thought Dave. I'm now ducking back down behind the parapet with one eye closed. :lol:

I have no problem in providing the necessary list, please email the request so I don't forget and I'll send it over to you this evening. But as you say it is a mammoth task cutting and pasting... I did it several times some years back and although very satisfying when complete it is too daunting for me to contemplate doing it again. However, if you create the fire I'll happily incorporate them.

My thoughts exactly Dave. I used the various files in the PF3 folder to identify the sound files needed and made some nice new ones: they sounded great (in a wav player at least) - but after you've done three or four and realise that there are several thousand still to go....

Would it not be more practical to get willing users on board to record the missing sounds from scratch, rather than try to edit the existing sounds to make new ones - a process that could not, I think, be batch run, so would take years to complete? (Airlines would continue to come and go faster than PF3 could keep up with them!). I was half joking in my original post, but I think there would be a good chance of getting enough trusted volunteers on board to spend a few weeks (probably) recording all the necessary files. It wouldn't matter at all that the voices were different from the existing set. I would gladly spend an hour or so each day speaking into a microphone! I am not sure that all the accents would be covered, but that wouldn't be too much of a loss at the side of the overall update.

The question is, what phrases would need to be recorded? No point just reproducing those already there with different people speaking them.

Finished sound recordings could then be sent to Dave M (or someone else! Far be it from me to 'volunteer' Dave for such a task!), who would need to check the sound quality and batch edit them as necessary to get the right 'radio' effect.

Or am I living in cloud cuckoo land? I admit that the above is, on my part, an 'idea in progress' - I haven't fully thought through yet what would actually need to be done in practical terms.

As an update to this, I have started the cut and paste process to add new airlines. So far I have done 77 out of the 121 accents needed for each airline. This has taken around 5hrs. So that is 121 accents per airline name. You do the math, airline accents per hour.
This is a huge task but one which at present I am enjoying. I am starting with the airlines in the UK as that is predominantly where I fly. This will take many, many weeks to make a dent in but with patience and some degree of stubbornness I will at least achieve some of my goal.
Once I've got two or three new airlines complete I will, with dave's permission share.
I will try to keep you updated with progress.

Just done the 26 in the American generic folder.Only 16 more to go to finish the first airline. :shock:
