Thank you for the help with my newbie questions so far. My next question is related to the topic title.
I loaded up a plan using a SID and a STAR made with PFPX. PF3 gave warning that the first and last WPs were too close to destination and departure. I tried to edit out the last few waypoints using PFPX but it doesnt seem to allow this. What is the best way to delete say the last two points without deleting the whole STAR?
I believe PF3 supports SIDs and STARs.
Cheers
Peter

Some flight planners will not let you delete waypoints from a SID or STAR without deleting the whole procedure, the argument being that if you do so you are not flying the 'true' procedure. I've always felt this is largely a bogus argument because real-world aircraft often don't fly the entire procedure and may be vectored off it for any number of reasons. If you need to remove a few waypoints from your flight plan and can't do it in the flight planner, you can manually edit the flight plan file, removing the waypoints and re-saving the file.

For the departure airport I think you get a warning if the waypoints are less than 10 miles from the airport. For the destination airport the warning may be at 15 miles but I would keep the last waypoint at least 20 miles out. When flying in Europe you leave the SID and STAR out of your PF3 flight plan in most cases because they are shorter and usually apply to a specific runway. In the US and Canada the SIDs/STARs are much longer and are used for multiple runways, so you will have some of the SID/STAR waypoints in your flight plan and eliminate those that are close to the airport.

Thanks but showing my newbieness here what method would you use to chop off a couple of waypoints? 🤔

For example in my flight plan from KSAN to KPHX I would like to wax all the waypoints from GEELA to the airport. But keep the ones from HOGGZ to GEELA.

Cheers

You can open the pln file using a text editor like Notepad and edit the file (delete the unwanted waypoints) and then save it. If you are using FSX, a waypoint has the format

<ATCWaypoint id="HOKAN">
<ATCWaypointType>Intersection</ATCWaypointType>
<WorldPosition>N37* 16' 55.00",E127* 7' 58.00",+000000.00</WorldPosition>
<ICAO>
<ICAORegion>KK</ICAORegion>
<ICAOIdent>HOKAN</ICAOIdent>
</ICAO>
</ATCWaypoint>

Try Little Navmap. It is freeware.

You can easily load any flightplan into Little Navmap, have it shown in a map, and delete waypoints comfortably with a few clicks. Only takes a few seconds.

My standard procedure is:

- create a flightplan with SimBrief (you can use PFPX instead of course)
- export to my aircraft's format and as pln-file
- open the pln-file with Little Navmap
- delete the waypoints that won't fit for PF3 (as per to Dan's post above)
- save flightplan as pln-file again
- load that pln into PF3
- adjust the altitudes of the final few waypoints (mostly decrease the altitudes a bit to be sure I won't be too high on final - decreasing the descent rate is always possible)

After having done that a few times it won't take more than 3 minutes for each flight.

Or you can delete the waypoints from the sim after loading the flightplan.
