Post subject:  Altitude stages

I'm not sure this is any fault with OCS but was wondering if someone could offer up any ideas. Every time I fly lately. I seem to be 500' adrift. eg on controllers instruction I might set the altitude for 10,000'. On reaching what my instruments tell me, I the controller still keeps telling me to to go to 10,000'. If I then climb to 10,500' both my co-pilot and the controllers seem to think I'm at the 10,000'.

Is it my aircraft, or something wrong with my OCS do you think?

Is your altimeter setting correct? If you think you are at a particular altitude and the controller disagrees, that's usually the cause.

Thanks for the quick response Dan. I've been hitting the 'B' key repeatedly but it seems to make no difference. I don't know of another way to correct it?

In which country did you fly? What is your transition altitude?

Both in the USA and Europe it doesn't matter, it still happens and frankly, I don't know what a 'transition altitude' is. I just fly, or try to, at the altitude the controller tells me.

I can't understand this. I've just done a flight and had no problem with altitudes! I'll never understand computers!

All the best to everyone.

If the controller tells you something in feet (e.g. 10000 feet), then you need to set your altimeter to the local pressure using the B key.
If the controller tells you a flight level (e.g. Flight Level 100), them you need to set your altimeter to standard pressure (29.92 inHg, or 1013.25 (or just 1013) hPa, depending on what your aircraft needs as input)

The transition altitude is the highest altitude at which the controller will give you an altitide in feet, but you can just listen to the controller.

If the local pressure is similar enough to the standard pressure, the altitudes do not differ that much and you'll get away with not configuring your altimeter correctly, so this depends on the weather.

Thanks Thomas. I think I understand it now. I'm most grateful.
