I feel I should have mastered this by this stage, but what is the best way to get PF3 to ask for initial descent nearer to the point where I am expecting it? I am almost always asked to descend way in advance of the ToD shown in Little NavMap and the aircraft FMC. I have tried to manage PF3's idea of where T/D should be by adding waypoints close to that point, but it's not working. Any advice? Thanks! (I am flying in XP11, but that probably makes no difference to this issue?).

If your decent profile if configured for a descent prior to PF3's calculation you would normally be given descent instructions at 'pilots discretion', which means you can start when you wish.

That was quick! Thanks. Yes, I do get that, 'at pilot's discretion', it's true and I ignore it until I get an unequivocal instruction to descend, which can still be before ToD. What triggers that initial descent instruction? It always happens just before a waypoint, but the 'wrong' one in practic - too soon.

I'd need to see a log file

Little Navmap and the aircraft FMC both have the T/D halfway between RESTE and RUSOS. PF3 asked me to descend before AKORO, which is not even the waypoint before RESTE. Log attached. Thanks.

Everything looks spot on in the log. When you reached AKORO you were told to descend to 22,000', which was in your flight profile. However, since this was prior to what PF3 had determined to be your TOD you were instructed to descend at 'Pilots Discretion'. We do it this way because although WE KNOW BEST  we also have to respect you may have set the flight profile a certain way for a good reason... hence the 'pilots discretion'.

At the point where you received this descend instruction PF3 had determined your TOD was actually at 79 miles from your destination, which is approximately just before RESTI.

Hope that helps
