Post subject:  Question on altitude assignments for a Sid.

When flying a Sid, if the altitude for a section of the SId is 6000 feet for instance, and PF3 tells me to climb to 12,000, am I supposed to stay at 6000 and ignore ATC instructions, or climb to 12,000?

PS

I also had the SID altitude for the waypoint Gosam set at 6000 feet, but despite that PF3 told me to climb to 12,000 feet.

In the real world ATC would generally always take precedence. :o

I'll take a look at your log shortly

I know Dave is checking into this but one thing I noticed is that you were departing from a field that had a Ground frequency and you got clearance on the default FSS frequency. You were prompted to switch to Ground frequency (Ground handles Clearance functions when there is no Clearance frequency).

If there is a Ground frequency and no Clearance frequency, you get your IFR clearance by tuning Ground and pressing 0. If there is a Tower frequency and no Ground or Clearance, you get your clearance on Tower frequency in the same way. Whether or not this has anything to do with the problems that followed, I'm not sure.

Got my clearance on FSS and was not told to switch to ground.

Dan is correct... your SID was not active as you didn't obtain your clearance

OH. OK, so being told that my FP would be activated by FSS and given initial altitude is not the same as getting clearance from tower or ground.... I get it now.. Thanks,

This is what Mr Google says about FSS
Quote:
A flight service station (FSS) is an air traffic facility that provides information and services to aircraft pilots before, during, and after flights, but unlike air traffic control (ATC), is not responsible for giving instructions or clearances or providing separation.
