Flight today similar to a few others lately; This time KMSY to KTLH.

Took off but the only directional ATC gave me was on approach. Neither did I get 'No speed restriction' after achieving 10,000'.

Is this right?

A bit of a moan is that whenever I land these days I always get 'Taxi to Terminal'. Never a parking spot.

You should try reading the manual. It's quite helpful at times!
Quote:
% Probability of a 'No Speed Restriction' under 10K - Normally aircraft
are restricted to a maximum of 250 knots below 10,000’, although at times
ATC can lift this restriction. If you set this to zero it turns the feature off
completely, setting it from 1-100 allows you to set the probability of getting
the call.
(A) As of version 3.7. The probability factor is set to something other than
zero
(B) Your aircraft is capable of going faster than 250 knots
(C) You are still in climb mode (i.e. you haven't reached your cruise altitude)
(D) You are IFR
(E) Your altitude is between 3000' and 9000' (AGL), which is also subject to a
randomizing factor applied using your percentage setting. However, if you
have a 'heavy' call-sign you will bypass the probability factor and WILL get
the 'no speed' call.

A bit of a moan is that whenever I land these days I always get 'Taxi to Terminal'. Never a parking spot.

Again reading the manual is also quite helpful in this matter too.
Quote:
Gate parking only - This option will ensure ATC will always send you
to a Gate rather than a Parking location when you receive taxi
instructions at your destination airport.
Please note: If you already have a gate/parking location 'reserved' for
any airport then that will take precedence over this option. Also,
please remember, if you select this option and arrive at an airport
where (a) you haven't reserved a gate and (b) there are no free gates
available, you will not be sent to a parking location but will instead
simply receive the default taxi instructions 'Taxi to Terminal'

Your takeoff clearance was to fly heading 330, which you never did... you stuck firmly to 343 :o

This is one of the problems with real life ATC and why in many ICAO countries the RT exam has a pass mark of 100%. Which demonstrates why maintainting a listening watch in real world aviation is absolutely crucial. With an ATC add-on for a simulator/game it is of course very different as the great majority of users are not trained radio operators. But nevertheless it is a good experience because users begin to understand how important real ATC actually is. In PF3 CP mode2 is of course a bit of a cop out in that your PO will do all the RT for you. You should though always listen in so that you can activate the correct hotkeys etc.
For voice activation however one really needs to pay attention. Like all ATC add-ons, PF3 has a limited voice pack as there are literally hundreds of options all having to be pre-recorded. I think the beta team has managed to extract a lot more out of the limited voice pool than existed before and that's why PF3 is probably the most accurate "overall". Plut it gives the user a very wide range of options allowing them to learn or just play.

I was told to fly runway heading which I did. It was at right angles to the actual route. However, with no instruction I flew for quite some time on the runway heading without any further directional instructions. Then I took matters into my own hands and got back on to the route with no heading instruction until I got on to approach.

Thanks for the info regarding speed restrictions and parking.

John, please reread my post and the extract taken from your log... you were instructed to fly 330 not runway heading

The best advice I can give is to redo the flight exactly as before but this time "listen" to ATC. Yes, it takes practice even in real life. Listen out for your call sign and write it down if necessary. If one is not sure if a message has been received/understood that's the best option. Then if there is still a problem let us know and we can investigate why it was missed. When one is trained and has an RT licence you have a sixth sense that something is awry. To the extent, and this is also part of the training, that you ask ATC to repeat any message or inform them that you are expecting a communication. There are sadly a number of incidents where ATC was misinterpreted leading to disaster. The phraseology especially that of ICAO is quite rigidly adhered to. Idle chat is therefore very much discouraged. It's even more important when there is a lot of company traffic about to maintain a listening watch. This is one of the reasons flight numbers are as they are so as not to confuse pilots thinking that ATC is talking to them and not someone else. When I fly into and out of Heathrow or Gatwick there is a lot of BA traffic so I have to listen carefully! :? :?

OK - thanks. Sorry to be a nuisance as usual. I forgot about the 330 bearing. I'm certainly not going to do the flight again as as much as possible I'm going around the edges of the USA.

All the best. Miami next. Watching out for crocodiles going across the Everglades!
