Today, while in mid-flight, I turned my transponder OFF and within a split second ATC came on and told me to check my transponder and gave me the code. I guess you must be in the air for this feature to work.
Did they tell you to squawk ident?

I turned the transponder from "ON" to "STANDBY" and ATC came on right away and said something like "Trans World 32, check your transponder. Squawk 4646". I then turned it back to "ON" and ATC was happy again.

Interesting ... this would invalidate my explanation about PF3 not receiving the information from FSX about the transponder status. Which aircraft did you use? Maybe it sets the transponder code to some special value (0000?) when it is turned off (or put on standby)

I'm using the Lockheed 749A from Cal Classic. The transponder can either be ON or OFF. It seems that ATC will recognize that its OFF if the aircraft is in the air, but not on the ground. I have a flight on Wednesday with a Convair 240 so I'll let you know about the transponder on that aircraft.

I fly the PMDG 737 and although the ATC does'nt seem to know if I turn the transponder off, it sure as hell knows if I turn the dial to a different squawk. It responds immediately with the check squawk followed by the correct code. Hope this helps.

PF3 only checks the actual setting and not if the unit is on or off :)
