Hi Dave...
When flying VFR outside the US or an area covered by FSS and you climb above the transition altitude ATC gives you the instruction to request IFR (at the transition altitude), however without FSS there is no way (I don't think) that you can request a switch from VFR to IFR. So you just plod along for several hundred miles with ATC reminding you every few minutes to request IFR. In fact I was on final for landing at LSGG, received tower clearance to land and then he told me to request IFR as I was nearing the blacktop. Not the end of the world, but annoying. I know, I could start out IFR, but in 1958 most of the flights were VFR.

Sorry, so what are you saying, there were no FSS frequencies available to you?

I wasn't flying nor writing code in 1958 !!

Dave - I may be wrong but this was something I asked about during beta testing i.e. contacting FSS to change from VFR/IFR/VFR. In PFE, one could contact FSS (on 122.20 ?) at any time to make such a request. However, with the removal of the PF2000 aspect in PF3, this is now not possible as FSS is now (correctly ?) only listed on varying frequencies in certain areas.

Unfortunately I'm unable to locate the conversation we had on this but perhaps you may now recall our thread ;)

As you say, FSS is not available at all times but that is because PF3 uses the frequencies from FS, so if there's no FSS frequency the only thing I could do would be to generate one on the fly. Maybe that's an option?
