Sorry, I should have been more explicit.
PFE\Options#1\Hotkey options\default
I now find that pressing the 0 key on the keyboard, not the keypad, closes FSX with a problem.

I reckoned that the file that was not being loaded because of the false positive anti virus error I was getting may have been the cause of my problem. I unistalled PFE again and turned off my AV and internet connection. Re installed and I am now getting ATC voices etc.
I do not get the green communication strip in FSX though.
